Group Work
This week was a rather quite production wise. There wasn’t anything really added in terms of team discussion this week as the idea was set and everyone just had their tasks to crack on with.
Individual work
I really tried to make my chair and footstool appear soft but just couldn’t find a way to do this in maya, which Is why both of the models I produced this week I would remake next week. In my effort to make soft objects I used the chesterfield buttoned styling. This in theory was a good idea as they are covered in a shiny material however I still don’t think this look can be properly achieved using maya.
I started with the footstool as this is a simple model that I could experiment with cushioning on. In modelling I was hopeful it would work as the high poly looked rather good with my use of soft selects. However, as you can see once I had baked the high poly onto the low poly and textured it the final product looked like it could be made of marble rather than leather.
I discussed this issue with Tom and he explained there wasn’t much more you could do just using Maya. This was annoying but I was still a little worried about trying to learn a new software in the time I had.
Really it was the chair that made me change my plans. I thought maybe the best way to achieve the chesterfield buttoned style was just to use substance texturing however I really didn’t like the result. I intend to place this environment in my portfolio, and with this chair and footstool I really didn’t think they met the standard I would wasn’t to present to people. I had really tried all I could think of to make them look soft here, yet all that had done is make the low poly more complex than needed thus hindering performance and still giving me hard assets.
I came away from week six feeling as thought I had wasted my time, however in hindsight I feel like this was the most productive week I had. This week forced me to take some time to learn how to use Zbrush in conjunction with maya and the final redesigns are the pieces of this environment I am most proud of.
