This was my first attempt at creating a 3D asset using Autodesk maya. I attempted several different designs before settling one. Firstly, I created a standard polygon cylinder. With the default height, width, and depth.

Next, I switched to face mode and deleted the top layer of the cylinder. Thus, giving me a very basic cup shaped cylinder. However, this shape was too thin to be used as a convincing object and so through using the extrude tool I increased the thickness of the object to 0.1. Giving me a much more authentic mug thickness.

After this I moved the cylinder to one side so I could create the handle for the mug. I did this by creating a polygon torus and rotating it along the x line by ninety degrees.

Then I deleted half of the torus, thus giving me a rough handle shape. Before setting the radius of the shape to point seventy-five.

After this I made both the handle and the cylinder cup smooth via the mesh tool and placed the parts so that they touched one another.

One issue found at this stage was that the new smoothened shape for the cylinder didn’t sit flush with the handle, so to counter this I used the multi-cut tool to cut the handle so that it sat flush with the cup.

Finally, I combined the two shapes so that they make one 3D mug asset. Ready to be textured.
